Principal, Armory Square Ventures
Location: New York City or Skaneateles, New York

ASV is looking for an exceptional principal to join our team. This is a partner track position and a unique opportunity to help scale our firm.

Founded in 2014, Armory Square Ventures (ASV) is a returns-oriented, mission-focused technology venture capital firm created out of one community’s desire to seed greater opportunities and jobs for those living in Upstate New York. We invest in startup markets in the Northeast and Midwest where we believe there may be untapped pockets of opportunity—our firm has catalyzed the creation of over 2,500 jobs over the past decade.

Our aim is to identify and support exceptional entrepreneurs from all backgrounds and encourage teams who may lack traditional access to capital and networks. We focus primarily on leading Seed and Series A rounds in B2B software companies in secondary markets in the Northeast and Midwest. We like to say we are an optimism engine for secondary cities and a community catalyst for regions outside Silicon Valley.

ASV has one of the top track records in the entire venture capital industry returning hundreds of millions of invested capital to its limited partners which include nonprofits, endowments, CEOs of past investments, and other blue chip institutional investors and family offices. The firm was an early investor in ACV Auctions (NASDAQ: ACVA) and BentoBox (acquired by Fiserv) and has many other exciting active investments including: Clerio, Qualifi, and Machinery Partner.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Deal Sourcing: Identify, qualify, and engage with compelling investment prospects to evaluate opportunities.

  • Due Diligence: Conduct industry and company specific analysis to verify investment opportunities by gathering information from target companies and researching market, personnel, and competition.

  • Deal Execution: Structure investment terms, prepare investment collateral, conduct internal investment committee discussions, execute 2 investments per year and serve on boards.

  • Portfolio Management – Represent ASV on boards of portfolio companies and support companies in all aspects of scaling from recruiting talent to attracting follow on capital.

  • Fund Management - Work with the Partners on portfolio management, fund operations, and administration.

  • Manage and Expand ASV’s Referral Network: Continuously engage with existing referral sources (limited partners, angel investors, later stage investors, incubators) to generate qualified deal flow. Help expand our network to include new referral sources.

  • Manage and Expand ASV’s Talent and Customer Network: Continuously engage and expand our network of C-level leaders and executive talent.

  • Thought Leadership: Represent ASV as speaker/panelist at industry/regional conferences and events; research and develop industry specific discussion content and investment roadmaps.

  • Community Building: Help support the secondary market ecosystems across the Northeast and Midwest

An ideal candidate will be someone who has:

  • Prior experience working in venture capital structuring investments and board experience.

  • Operating experience at technology companies is preferred, especially in sales, business development or product roles.

  • Strong professional network with proven ability to forge connections in new geographies with limited guidance/oversight.

  • Proven experience to manage a quota to achieve sales, recruiting and capital raising goals.

  • Experience and understanding of B2B Software and B2B marketplaces.

  • Strong operational and financial acumen.

  • Strong desire to spend a large amount of time each month traveling to secondary markets (Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Columbus, Indianapolis, etc.).

Other Traits we desire in this candidate include:

  • Exceptional Communication and Analytical skills – Can you help us separate wheat from the chaff and present the case to the investment committee on why we should invest?

  • Sales DNA - Can you persuade another VC or angel to join a round? Or persuade a seasoned operator to leave her or his job to join our portfolio company?  Can you persuade a CEO who is fielding multiple term sheets to work with us?

  • Independent Thinking – Sales is one part of the VC brain. The other part involves evaluating risks and taking a bet where others may be fearful. We do not follow the herd.

  • Humility – We are a scrappy organization, and no task is beneath us.

  • Empathy – We are company builders and love supporting entrepreneurs in all stages of the startup journey. We want a person who listens to founders and can help win their trust. We enjoy often being the first call for any founder we back.

  • Collaborative – We pride ourselves in having a culture where we support each other and our CEOs. There is no room for politics in our shop – we like people who are open, transparent, and respectful.

  • Intellectually Curious We want people who are hungry to learn ASV’s approach to investing and scaling businesses to grow into a Partner.
